Chances for Pakistan reaching the Super Eight stage after winning over Canada

In the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Pakistan team played its third and most important match against Canada in New York on Tuesday. Canada lost by seven wickets.

Canada had given Pakistan a target of 107 runs to win, and the national team had to achieve this target in 13.5 overs to overtake the United States in net run rate. However, the Pakistani batters could not do it due to slowness and 14 overs. I could only score 81 runs.

However, the national team completed the target of 107 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 17.3 overs.

Pakistan’s chances to reach Super Eight

The top 2 teams from each group of 5 in the T20 World Cup will qualify for the Super Eight stage.

To continue their journey in the World Cup, the national team must not only win the next match but also pray for America’s defeat against India and Ireland because if America gets even one more point, Pakistan’s journey will be over.
The following results from the remaining matches in Group A could propel Pakistan to the next stage.

  • June 12: India vs USA (India Win)
  • June 14: Ireland vs USA (Ireland to win)
  • June 15: India vs Canada (India win)
  • June 16: Pakistan vs Ireland (Pakistan Win)

If all the results go according to the above scenario, Pakistan will have 4 points from 4 matches, while India will have 8 points.

America will finish the group stage with 4 points, followed by Pakistan, Canada, and Ireland, with 2 and 2 points, respectively.
Thus, India will directly qualify for the Super Eight stage with 8 points, while the USA and Pakistan will each have 4 points. In this case, the net run rate will come into effect. However, Green Shirts should win against Ireland by a large margin, and they hope that the US loses by a large margin to India and Ireland.

Chairman PCB statements and team’s surgery plan

Chairman PCB said that;

“We should wait for the final result of the tournament; everyone is praying that the team will come forward.”

He added;

“The consultation is ongoing and inappropriate to discuss it further; whatever the team is, we have to go ahead in this tournament.”

While expressing disappointment over the national team’s defeat in the big match against India, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi said that today’s defeat was disappointing in all respects; Pakistani cricket was at its lowest grade then.

He further added;

“It seemed that the cricket team would be OK with a minor surgery, but after today’s abysmal performance, it is inevitable that a major surgery is needed.”

Chairman PCB stated;

“The nation would soon see significant surgery, our biggest challenge to improve the team’s performance.”
